Shows the average level of blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months.

Also used to diagnose diabetes.

People with diabetes need to have this test done regularly to see whether their blood sugar levels have been staying within a target range.

Hemoglobin A1c test results show your average blood sugar level over time. The result of your A1c test can also be used to estimate your average blood sugar level. This is called your estimated average glucose, or eAG.

Gives important information about the kinds and numbers of cells in the blood, especially red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets

Helps your doctor check any symptoms such as weakness, fatigue or bruising

Also helps your doctor diagnose conditions such as anemia, infection and many other disorders

Used to determine a cause behind decreased sex drive and/or loss of muscle mass in both men and women.

Used to pinpoint hormonal imbalance (excess estrogen, testosterone deficiency) in both men and women.

Used to find out why a woman is developing male features, such as excessive facial and body hair (hirsutism) or a deeper than normal voice.

Used to find out why a woman is having irregular menstrual periods.

Measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland) in a man’s blood

PSA is often elevated in men with prostate cancer. The PSA test was originally approved by the FDA in 1986 to monitor the progression of prostate cancer in men who had already been diagnosed with the disease.

In 1994, the FDA approved the use of the PSA test in conjunction with a digital rectal exam (DRE) to test asymptomatic men for prostate cancer. Men who report prostate symptoms often undergo PSA testing along with a DRE to help doctors determine the nature of the problem.

In addition to prostate cancer, a number of benign (noncancerous) conditions can cause a man’s PSA level to rise. The most frequent benign prostate conditions that cause an elevation in PSA level are:

– Prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate)
– BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement of the prostate)

There is no evidence that prostatitis or BPH leads to prostate cancer, but it is possible for a man to have one or both of these conditions and to develop prostate cancer as well.

Measures the amount of estradiol in your blood
Used to determine the cause of gynecomastia (the development of breasts in men)
Used to confirm or further diagnose hyperthyroidism (which is caused by an overactive thyroid gland)

Estradiol (also called E2) is a form of the hormone estrogen. The ovaries, breasts and adrenal glands make estradiol. During pregnancy, the placenta also makes estradiol (in males, the adrenal glands and testes make estradiol).

Men also have estradiol in their bodies, but levels of estradiol are significantly lower than levels in women.

Estradiol helps with the growth and development of sex organs, and also helps to control the way fat is distributed in the body. It’s additionally essential for bone and joint health.

Estradiol levels that are higher or lower than normal may suggest:
– Tumors in the ovaries or testes
– Menopause
– Ovarian failure (premature menopause)
– Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
– Hypopituitarism
– Hypogonadism (when the ovaries or testes don’t produce enough hormone)
– Cirrhosis (scarring of the liver)
